Your business may have gotten by with old-school networking technologies based on standard internet protocols for years now – but is it time to trade up for something newer and better, such as an MPLS network? Here are four telltale signs that you might be ready to adopt MPLS, courtesy of our Austin IT managed services team at Gravity Systems:

1. Your network has to “just work” with a variety of standards and technologies. This is especially true if you're about to go global in your business transactions. Different parts of the world may rely on different Internet connection methods, from Ethernet or SDH to SONET/ATM connectivity. MPLS is happy to support multiple connection methods and media, giving you a flexible solution that “just works” instead of creating hassles.

2. You're looking to eliminate glitchy behavior. If you're frustrated by time lag, jitter, and other imperfections in your network performance, you're probably running over a public Internet connection that can't differentiate between the high-priority traffic and the low-priority traffic. When your have MPLS, you also have access to Quality of Service (QoS), which can prioritize packets as needed. MPLS connections can also be managed end-to-end, which helps to ensure steady uptime.

3. You need to be able to expand your network on a massive scale. Yes, an ordinary Ethernet network can handle hundreds of connections – but what if you need ten times that many? MPLS boasts an extraordinarily wide range of scalability, taking you from 3 connections all the way up to thousands.

4. You want to beef up your VPN's security. A cloud-based Virtual Private Network (VPN) can be vulnerable to attacks. But if your VPN runs on MPLS, its signals are being handled by one carrier, not the “Wild West” of the public Internet.
