Installing applications on a computer can be a tedious and at times complicated process, especially when things do not go smoothly.  We ran into an issue the other day.  While attempting to re-install an application, the installer errored out several times.  After some troubleshooting and research, we found the fix.  Some applications use the user shell folder registry keys when installing.

Issue: Unable to Install Application

System: Windows Server 2008 Standard

Error Code: Program installer errors out mid-progress

Solution:

  • Open regsity editor, Start, Run, "regedit".

  • Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders.

  • Check for any keys that do not point to %userprofile%

  • AppData will sometimes point to %appdata% rather than %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming.

  • Edit any keys as neccessary.

  • Re-boot the computer.

  • Re-attempt the application install.
