A customer in a server/client environment was attempting to move a folder in a shared directory on the server. The customer was getting an error stating that files were open and the folder could not be moved. Following the steps below, we were able to resolve the problem.
Issue: Unable to move folders on server share. Receive message that files were open.
System: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003
Error Code: Cannot move folder. Files open.
Solution:

On server - check for open files/folders in Computer Management > System Tools > Shared Folders. If no files/folders are open except thumbs.db – follow steps below; otherwise, close open files/folders and try to move folder.

On workstation – in Explorer Tools > Folder Options > View / Advanced Settings
1. Turn on “Always show icons, never thumbnails”
2. Turn off “Display file icon on thumbnails”
