Energy bills are no joke, especially as we move toward summer – but some smart IT system practices can help you survive. Here are some suggestions from your IT managed services team at Gravity Systems.

Run fewer components. Are you running three servers where one would do? Do you have extra workstations and peripherals draining “phantom power” from your electrical system needlessly? Run an inventory of your current equipment to see how much of it you actually need to be powering – and how much of it can be discarded or at least left unplugged.

Invest in energy-efficient hardware. Newer technologies frequently offer greater energy efficiency than previous models, and computer hardware is no exception. If you're looking to upgrade your computers, for instance, units containing solid-state drives are likely to use less energy than units with standard hard drives. They also emit less heat, which means you don't have to run your AC as hard.

Outsource some of your IT functions. Do you really need to run all f your IT functions on site? Consider a move to outsourced IT possibilities such as running off of secure remote servers instead of your own in-house equipment. Not only will you save some energy, but you'll have more usable space in your facility – another boost to your operational efficiency.
