Ideally, your IT system sits there humming happily away for years without calling any unwelcome attention to itself. But when it finally fails, so does your productivity. Here are some potential warning signs to watch out for, courtesy of your Austin business IT support team at Gravity Systems.
Hard drive death gasps – A mechanical server, workstation or laptop hard drive may give out several cries for help before it finally dies on you for good. Sluggish response, periodic boot errors, video glitches not attributable to the source are all signs of potential hard drive problems. If your hard drive is making clicking noises, back up its data immediately because that drive is probably on its last legs.
“Hot potato” hardware – If your hardware components seem unusually hot to the touch or are radiating ridiculous amounts of heat into the air, you're flirting with imminent failure. Check system fans to make sure they're still working. If your equipment is caked with dust, it may need a thorough internal and external cleaning. If you've got hardware crammed into a tight cabinet or against a wall, relocate it so it can breathe.
Bad RAM – RAM chips can develop glitches, leading to crashed applications, corrupted file systems or even the dreaded Blue Screen of Death. If your operating system's built-in diagnostics can't fix these glitches, then you may need to replace the RAM.
Driver dilemmas – Graphics cards and other driver hardware can become faulty over time, giving you a Blue Screen of Death instead of access to your work. We can examine blue-screen errors messages for clues to which driver may be causing your computer to fail.
If it's the beginning of the end for your hardware, don't panic. Call Gravity Systems and our Austin business IT specialists will come to the rescue!
