Rain, wind, thunder, lightning, hail – we're accustomed seeing the Central Texas sky put on some dramatic displays in the month of April. If you've ever had the power go off in your home or had to replace a window due to hail damage, you know what spring storms can do. Even worse, damage to your IT system can grind your whole enterprise to a halt. Here are some tips on how to protect your technology – and your productivity – against foul weather.

Protect your circuitry. A stray lightning strike can end the lives of your electronic components in a split-second. Invest in powerful surge protectors that offer insurance against spike-related damage. Then check those surge protectors periodically to make certain they're still offering full protection.

Back up your power systems. When the lights go out, does your IT system go out too? Even a momentary blip might force all your servers and workstations to waste precious time rebooting themselves. Attach battery-equipped UPI (uninterruptible power supply) units to your computers, and your productivity can weather the storm.

Have your telecommuting technologies in place. If your physical business location were trashed by hail, flooded into uselessness, or blown away by a tornado, would you still be able to conduct business? It might be possible if you've set up telecommuting and cloud-based remote work services for your employees.
